Below are nine suggestions from "Ways to go Green." for saving you money by following some simple and relatively inexpensive ways which can save you money by living a greener life style.
1) Avoid short journeys in your car where possible, economise or replace it with a two wheeler, a Motorbike or Scooter. Maybe a bicycle or on foot where possible.(Shanks's pony!) It helps in saving lots of money spent on petrol and/or diesel, as well as helping the environment. Not to mention walking is good for you and quite therapeutic at times.
2) Use electric appliances only when needed! Such as, do not turn on any electrical appliance or light when there is no need to use it. Turn your lights off when they are not in use! Also, ensure you always turn your computer and electrical goods like TV, OFF when they are not in use. You will be surprised how much money you will save!
3) Use energy saving light bulbs for lighting, such as compact fluorescent light bulbs.(CFL's) Energy light bulbs and Energy saving light bulbs use only one third of energy compared to other standard light bulbs and their life span is up to six times longer than that of other normal light bulbs.
4) Take showers instead of baths, if that's not possible spend less time in the shower so that a greater amount of water can be saved. You could also use something like a Eaga shower Smart! These can be found FREE online. These will help in reducing water used and reduce your water bills! At the same time helping the environment by being that little bit greener.
5) Buy food items in bulk when possible as purchasing through bulk helps in saving a lot of money and packaging. This can be difficult sometimes especially if you live on your own.
6) Use those carry bags which are pollution free where possible. Such as paper bags or recycled material bags. Reuse these bags as it saves money in buying more carry bags. You could even buy one of those "Bag for life" from your local supermarket or superstore.
7) Collecting rainwater and using it saves a lot of money on water bills as rainwater is free. You can save thousands of litres of water annually by completing this one sustainable act. If you do not drink it, you can certainly use it to water the garden.
These final two could prove to be quite costly but grants are available for home owners. Maybe you could build your own equipment! See the Ways to go green website in resource box.
8) Install a Solar panel for heating your water. Even convert your house to run on solar power you could earn some money back if you put half of the electricity you make back into the grid. So, you get free electricity and you get paid also! "Happy days."
9) You could put up a windmill that generates electricity in your garden. Maybe on your roof top, even on your chimney. This will doubtfully produce more electricity than your Solar panel that depends not only on the size of your Windmill but also how much wind you have in your home area.
All of the above ways are beneficial in saving money by a green living lifestyle. Although some of the ways may seem trivial and some quite costly. The long term benefits and savings you will make over the years after are phenomenal. Not to mention the bigger picture which is helping the environment, which in turn is helping us all.
